Meet Melissa

Stanley (spiritual, evolving, loyal)

I discovered two things in the second grade that changed my life forever: God and books. I've loved both of them ever since.

I enjoy reading just about anything as long as it's good writing. I like fiction, poetry, literary criticism, philosophy, spirituality, Thomas Merton, the Desert Mothers & Fathers, queer studies, and even a good cookbook.

The five books I would absolutely need on a desert island would be:
1. The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton
2. My Breviary
3. The Complete Plays of Shakespeare
4. My Shorter Oxford Dictionary (The two volume set)
5. The Larousse Gastronomique (cookbooks should be like good novels)

When not reading I can be found cooking, doing Sudoku (everyday), Pinochle, dominoes, hiking, kayaking and hanging out with my wonderful Osgood neighbors. I'm also a member of the Thomas Merton Society of the Capital Region.

Favorite line from a book: "You do not have to be good, you do not have to cross the desert for a hundred miles on your knees repenting." –Mary Oliver from New and Selected Poems Volume 1.

Favorite book when you were a child: Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stephenson

Life-changing book: Another Country by James Baldwin

Book you most want to read again for the first time: Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton

Top authors: James Baldwin, Thomas Merton, Mary Oliver

Stanley's last 10 recommendations:
A Book of Hours - Thomas Merton
Audrey Bennett signing Design Studies
When you were me - Robert Rodi
